Shankhpushpi is a prostrate, spreading, perennial, wild herb commonly found on sandy or rocky ground under xerophytes conditions in northern India. Shankhpushpi's flowers are blue in color and the leaves, which are elliptic in shape, are located at alternate positions with branches or flowers. The extract of the plant helps in reducing cholesterol levels in blood including triglycerides, phospholipids and fatty acids. The whole herb is used medicinally in the form of decoction with cumin and milk in fever, nervous debility, loss of memory, also in syphilis and scrofula. Shankhpushpi is used as a brain tonic. The plant is reported to be a prominent memory improving drug. It is used as a psycho stimulant and tranquilizer.
